Metaverse | A New Reality
Introduction to Metaverse
What is the Metaverse? The most common way to see Metaverse today is through a VR headset or an Oculus Rift, it will feel like you’ve been transported into another world. As people get more immersed in this new experience they may start questioning why they are doing these things and how much of our lives will remain separate from reality. (or maybe some still don’t understand what is happening?) It is a place where there is no place for us to be, but one that we can explore.
Some examples we’ll talk about here
When I started reading “The Matrix” by Andy Weir, I found myself searching for something about what goes on in a dystopian future where everything went wrong and all that was needed to do for the individual was to become like Neo and escape to the virtual world and live a life as he did in the film. This idea was completely fictional, which made me think about how even though not everyone understood the films, now they do, so it seems like the real world has fallen back into normalcy, like when you’re going shopping and all you see or hear on the street is the store owner talking to you, or maybe just walking around while being aware of someone close behind you. Now, this thought makes me wonder how many things could change similarly in the Metaverse. Imagine a city that we all have access to but doesn’t represent any specific person because they’re all different. If every individual had a holographic avatar, would we still be able to distinguish ourselves from any other person? Would those beings that were once separate now have identities in their own right? Maybe if people all lived in the same city, and had different characters, things wouldn’t always feel like something else. But maybe if technology kept changing, how would this play out? A lot of changes would take time, maybe there would be a few people who were born with special abilities and then others who weren’t. Maybe there would be events that changed the landscape of a city and the people within it. These are all good questions, let’s just leave them for now!
But at the same time…
We can also be curious about how far we can go, and what we can build. And how it could affect society. There are a couple of interesting scenarios we can look at. In a futuristic dystopia or alternate reality, we can imagine a world where governments do anything they want to accomplish. How many rights do people have? What kind of jobs do they get? Do they even work? When would politicians be allowed to hide their power? Who will run Metaverse for office? Is the government free? When things are not as they look, does the public ever see the truth? Just because something was supposed to be, doesn't mean it will be as it looks. For example, maybe what is known to everyone isn’t true, maybe what is known to certain people is less than what is considered right, or maybe if anyone ever tried to tell you something the results would be tragic. Maybe there wouldn’t be any government or laws that people respect, it would just be whatever they wanted. Or maybe because money was taken away, people wouldn’t need money anymore. Maybe the laws on crime were drastically lowered, or perhaps there were none at all. All these possibilities could occur. So what would happen with these ideas if people began to question their beliefs about politics? How much freedom might people have to exercise in this world? Could democracy still exist or how long would it continue? Could the majority keep control? Some people may not fully believe in the world they live in. People could begin to rebel against the current situation. Even worse, though it would probably cost a large amount of money to implement, it may seem like nothing. Let’s hope this hypothetical world becomes possible, it would seem like science fiction but still very plausible.
But in an alternate world like this, maybe we won’t be able to achieve any progress whatsoever. Maybe we can see that in 10 or 20 years most people can’t even drive, let alone talk to each other without going insane, but it would seem like nobody understands how dangerous their lives could be. Maybe if we all did this, there would be a whole bunch of individuals that never make it out alive. But maybe it is more likely that it is us that don’t have a choice and stay stuck in a dead-end job just trying to survive. Maybe, no matter what we try, the world's population will reach 4 billion soon enough or maybe nothing ever happens at all. How can we know, we don’t know, and there are lots of possibilities, maybe it takes over 100 million for mankind to go completely extinct within 50 years, but maybe we don’t have that long left. Maybe a robot named WALL will suddenly become more human and become stronger than all humans and decide to take over Earth or maybe it will take over humanity. Maybe it will go rogue to protect itself.
